The April update of the Galaxy S24 is supposed to improve their photo section. We wanted to verify Samsung's promises.

After South Korea, Europe is served. The April update is here for the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Through it, Samsung corrects some bugs and vulnerabilities, but above all makes significant improvements to the One UI 6.1 photo application.
This version, commonly labeled S92xBXXU1AXCA, requires downloading 921 MB of data. To check if it is available for you, go to your phone's settings, then to Update.
We applied it to our test Galaxy S24 Ultra and observed in passing that our model has not yet switched to seamless updates, a process supposed to make the operation less intrusive for the user. Also, you still have to wait a few minutes after downloading, while the installation is completed.
For the photo part that interests us, Samsung is putting forward four notable improvements:
Better white balance and exposure accuracy, Improved image quality in low light, More precise colorimetry in the ExpertRAW application, Clearer text on highly zoomed photos.
Some photos worse after update
We played the game of difference by shooting before/after update photos to see the promised improvements. Our Twitch studio offering good daylight, it was ideal for this exercise.
Photo in basic mode
In classic photography with the basic photo mode of the S24 Ultra, we can clearly see the differences put forward by Samsung. The result gains in exposure with a slightly cooler and better balanced white balance.
Low light photo
In night mode, in the studio plunged into darkness, the rendering after updating is less good. The white balance is too hot and spoils the result. In addition, there is poor color management of the background, the back wall of the studio is gray, here it appears purplish with the Samsung update. On the other hand, we benefit from a less pastel colorimetry, closer to reality. For this we refer to the graphics of the game “La Boîte à Culture” placed to the left of the photo. We note in passing that the updated night mode increases to 4 seconds of exposure, compared to 3 seconds previously on the same scene.
We also tested without night mode. Here, we once again prefer the snapshot before updating. It benefits from better exposure and is, above all, less noisy.
“High-zoom” photo
On the zoom side, we expected miracles. Being able to read from afar is always nice. Unfortunately, the keys of the old MO5 that is lying around on our shelves are no more readable after the update of our S24 Ultra than before. Since Samsung specifies “high-zoom” photos, we only shot at x30 and x100. Nothing changes, it's a mush of pixels.
Photo en ExpertRAW
Finally, ExpertRaw mode should benefit from more precise colorimetry. With the naked eye, we do not observe any difference, which in no way detracts from the high quality of this mode.
