For several years, Apple completely dominated the number of years of smartphone updates compared to Android. But with recent support promises from Google and Samsung, it looks like Apple may be left behind.
The broken apple company was forced by UK regulators to reveal the support time for iPhone 15 updates. And as Android Authority reveals, Apple promises “a minimum of 5 years” of updates for these devices.
This means that the latest smartphones from Samsung and Google could have more years of updates than these iPhones. Remember that Samsung promises 7 years of updates for the Galaxy S24 and Google promises the same amount of time for updates for the Pixel 8.
However, there is a word here that makes all the difference: minimum. Apple will provide a “minimum” of 5 years of updates, not committing to more. However, Apple's history says that, if desired, the brand provides more than five years of updates to its equipment.
The interesting part, in this case, is that we have a number officially assumed by Apple. As in other areas of its presentations, Apple does not usually reveal on stage or on its website the number of years of updates to its equipment. But now we have a better idea of what to expect.
It looks like Google and Samsung are winning the battle. But it is not yet known whether they will win the war.
