Samsung is about to debut in the smart ring market with the Galaxy Ring. And while that doesn't happen, this gadget is already a reason to take the company to court due to what it expects to be a patent war.
In this sense, Samsung initiated preventive legal action against the company Oura. With this process, the South Korean company aims to obtain a “declaratory sentence” that clears it of infringing any patents held by its rival.
Samsung wants to get ahead of the likely lawsuits triggered by Oura
The action taken by Samsung is unusual, but it reveals that the company is paying attention to this market. She opted for this legal action because she is already anticipating that Oura will want to go to court to try to stop the success of the Galaxy Ring.
The document completed by Samsung highlights Oura's profile of suing its rivals based on “features common to virtually all smart rings.” Strictly speaking, it mentions sensors, electronics, battery and metrics from sensors.
To support its concerns, Samsung gives as an example legal cases that pitted Oura against brands such as Ultrahuman, Circular or RingConn. In some of these cases, the processes were triggered before the rings were released onto the market.
Shortly after the initial presentation of the Samsung Galaxy Ring, Oura immediately began trying to “mark ground”. In statements to various media outlets, including The Verge, the company highlighted the strength of its intellectual property portfolio.
In an interview with the North American network CNBC, Oura stated that it was closely monitoring the Galaxy Ring. Furthermore, she mentioned that she would “take appropriate actions” given the imminent arrival of a new competitor.
These types of statements are seen by Samsung as a threat to take it to court for some reason inherent to the Galaxy Ring's features. After all, Oura has a reputation for attacking its new rivals with lawsuits that try to undermine their success in the market.
Galaxy Ring could be released in stores in August
The process triggered by Samsung also highlights the calendar for the launch of the Galaxy Ring. In the document, it can be read that its design was finalized in mid-May, that its production will begin in mid-June and its launch in stores is expected in August or around that month.
There is also a screenshot of the Samsung Health application where we can see an option called “Power points”. This will be based on metrics such as sleep, activity or heart rate.
