Apple appears to have completed the design process for its new generation of cell phones and would be moving towards evaluating the components. According to a report from The Elec, two manufacturers will be responsible for supplying the screens for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max: Samsung Display and LG Display.
This could mean that, again, the BOE will be left out of the production of components for the Pro modelswhich could bring important changes to the front design with thinner edges than those of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Considering that it has greater screen production capacity than LG, it is reported that Samsung will be responsible for supplying the OLED panels for all iPhone 16 models. LG, in turn, will only produce the most expensive models.
BOE will only supply conventional screens with LTPS OLED technology for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which will be the most basic models in the line.
The South Korean companies have not yet received approval for the production of new OLED panels. It is speculated that the delay in component approval is due to the fact that Apple will use a new display technology called “Border Reduction Structure”, which promises to reduce the thickness of the screen edges compared to its predecessors.
Naturally, this design presents challenges for screen manufacturers, so intense work is expected in the testing phase with the new components.
LG will reportedly receive approval for mass production of the screens in mid-June, according to the report. Like Samsung, the company has already received approval to produce the iPhone 16 Pro screens, and appears to be awaiting Apple's green light to manufacture the iPhone 16 Pro Max panels.
