A lot of very worrying information is emerging online about a screen problem affecting some older Samsung Galaxy devices, as reported by the AndroidAuthority website. Called the “green line problem,” it manifests as a thin, vertical green line that disrupts the screen, potentially impairing the phone's functionality. This problem seems to mainly affect smartphones in the Galaxy S21 range, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21 FE models being the most frequently cited.

Alert! Update is turning Samsung smartphones green!

Some users seem to have found the green line randomly. Others attribute it to software updates or intense use, such as gaming sessions. An X/Twitter user reported noticing the line immediately after installing a software update on their Galaxy S21 FE. Another found it after installing the April patch on his Galaxy S21 Ultra (model number SMG998B).

The exact cause of the green line problem remains unclear. While it may just be a software fault, software-related faults should normally be resolved with a simple restart or factory reset. The fact that the problem persists for some users suggests a potential hardware defect.

What causes the green line problem?

The most likely cause of the green line problem appears to be a faulty display connector or flex cable. These internal components connect the screen to the phone's main circuit board, and any damage or looseness to them can cause the screen to malfunction.

While it's easy to dismiss the fact that this issue arises with software updates as a coincidence, a quick search on social media platforms reveals that many users have experienced similar issues with their older Samsung models. Most of these cases were also associated with software updates.

One possible explanation is that software updates, along with environmental factors, can generate enough heat (especially on smartphones with Samsung's Exynos chipsets) to cause or accelerate a pre-existing hardware defect in the display assembly. Some theorize that this heat can loosen the glue that holds the screen components together, leading to the green line problem. However, this theory is not entirely conclusive. Intensive activities such as gaming also generate significant heat, but are less frequently associated with the problem.

Last year, the green line issue also affected older AMOLED smartphones from other manufacturers. OnePlus, in response to similar complaints, has started offering its customers in India a lifetime warranty on the screen of its own affected devices.

Although Samsung has not yet officially acknowledged this issue, the company has already offered repairs and replacements for similar issues experienced by Galaxy S20 series users in the past. If you are experiencing a similar issue on your Galaxy device, it is advisable to proactively document your issue. This with photos or videos and present your case to a Samsung representative.
