According to the latest data from IDC, Apple is losing out to its eternal competitor Samsung in smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2024. Nothing unusual… except for one detail: a Chinese company almost unknown in France is included in the ranking of best sellers.

The start of the year is rarely favorable for Apple in terms of smartphone sales and it is in this context that, this year again, the firm ceded its place as the leading mobile seller to its Korean rival Samsung in the first quarter. 2024.

At least that is what the figures published this week by the analysis firm IDC reveal, which on the other hand highlight the astonishing progress of a little-known Chinese entity in France, Transsion; but also the overall increase in smartphone sales compared to last year. Good news for a market that has been seriously slowing down over the past three years.

The smartphone market is regaining color

As reported by 01Net, the first quarter of 2024 is marked by a 7.8% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. This is also the third consecutive quarter of improvement in this area, a sign of virtuous dynamics for the mobile market.

In any case, we see that Apple loses practically 10% of its growth compared to the first quarter of 2023, and that the firm falls behind Samsung in the IDC ranking, with 17.3% market share, compared to 20.8% for its competitor. The data gleaned by IDC also attest to a significant rise for the Chinese Xiaomi, which is in third place in the ranking, in particular thanks to its volume of units sold. IDC estimates that the brand managed to sell 10 million more smartphones than last year over the same period.

The surprise of this ranking, because there is one, however, comes from the Chinese group Transsion. Globally unknown to the battalion in France and Europe, the Chinese company takes fourth place on the podium, ahead of Oppo, managing to glean 8.7% market share with its 28.5 million smartphones distributed in the first quarter. 2024. Enough to show an insolent growth of 84.9% over this period. A performance that the company, very present in China and Africa, owes to its various brands (including Tecno, Itel and Infinix)… and which allows it to dismiss its compatriot Vivo, suddenly out of this ranking.
