The last quarter of a year tends to give Apple leadership in the smartphone market, in what is a quarter of new iPhone launches. But after the first quarter of the following year, this leadership is not always maintained. And in 2024 it was like that, with Samsung returning to the top of the podium.

Preliminary IDC data for the first quarter of 2024 reveals that Samsung reached 60.1 million shipments, with a market share of 20.8%. These numbers exceed Apple's 50.1 million shipments, with a market share of 17.3%.

Xiaomi holds third place in the smartphone market

Xiaomi has been increasingly cementing its position as the third force in the smartphone market. Lei Jun's company managed 40.8 million shipments in the first quarter of 2024, giving it a market share of 14.1%.

The growth trend also continues in the Transsion group, in fourth place with 28.5 million shipments and 9.9% market share. Remember that this group has brands such as Tecno, Itel and Infinix. Fifth place remains with Oppo, with 25.2 million shipments and a market share of 8.7% in this market.

Ryan Reith, vice president of the Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers group at IDC says: “While Apple managed to take the top spot in late 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone vendor in the first quarter.” .

The executive says that these two manufacturers are expected to remain at the top, but the “resurgence of Huawei in China, as well as the notable gains of Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus and Vivo will likely make both manufacturers look for areas to expand and diversify.”
