After several users complained about a “strong smell” in the Galaxy S24 Ultra's S Pen stylus, Samsung went public to clarify the supposed “problem”.
According to a moderator of the company's European forum, this Burning plastic smell is “normal” for the pen. This is because it is inside its slot and, when the smartphone heats up, it ends up absorbing part of that heat.
Therefore, it is common for the smell of hot plastic to end up becoming a characteristic of the pen. The moderator even said that it was as if a car spent the day under the sun.
Eventually, it will also have a bad smell on its internal components, but this may dissipate a few hours later.
Check out the full statement from the Samsung representative:
This is nothing to worry about. While the S Pen is in its slot, it is close to the cell phone's internal components, which will generate heat during use, and cause the plastic to heat up. This can create a burning smell, but it's similar to the smell you might smell after leaving your car in the sun for a few hours.
He also assured that this “bad smell” has nothing to do with the type of plastic or chemical elements present in the construction of the pen, reassuring users who had assumed the use of inappropriate materials on Reddit.
Interestingly, following complaints involving the Galaxy S24 Ultra, many owners of the Galaxy S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra also noticed the “bad smell”.
However, the old Galaxy Note 20 Ultra stylus did not have the same problem due to its construction in glossy plastic instead of the current rubberized coating.
