The Samsung 990 Evo has previously been in our test lab. The drive’s special feature is that it can operate in both PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 modes. There is no difference in throughput or performance, but Samsung believes that in the future this feature will be useful for saving PCIe lanes in ultraportable computers.

The new 990 Evo Plus model has the same connectivity feature – it has two PCIe 5.0 lanes and four PCIe 4.0. The drive uses a proprietary Samsung controller based on the 5-nm process technology and V-NAND flash memory chips of the 8th generation. The 990 Evo Plus will be available in 1, 2 and 4 TB capacities. Its predecessor is only available in 1 and 2 TB capacities.

The 1TB version of the Samsung 990 Evo Plus is claimed to have sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,150 and 6,300 MB/s. For the 2TB and 4TB variants, these figures are up to 7,250 and 6,300 MB/s, respectively. Its predecessor in 1TB and 2TB versions provided 5,000 and 4,200 MB/s, respectively.

The 1TB 990 Evo Plus is rated at 850,000 and 1.35 million random IOPS, the 2TB model is rated at 1 million and 1.35 million IOPS, and the 4TB model is rated at 1.05 million and 1.4 million IOPS, respectively. Its 1TB and 2TB predecessors were rated at 680,000–700,000 and 800,000 IOPS, respectively. Samsung also claims the new 990 Evo Plus is up to 73% more energy efficient than its predecessor.

The write endurance remains the same: 600 TBW (terabytes of rewritten information) for the 1 TB version and 1,200 TBW for the 2 TB model. For the 4 TB version, it is 2,400 TBW. All three versions of the 990 Evo Plus NVMe drive come with Samsung Magician Software monitoring software and support 256-bit AES encryption.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus will go on sale this fall. The 1TB version of the SSD costs $110, the 2TB version costs $185, and the 4TB model costs $345.
