Epic Games is going to put away Fortnite and its other games are from competitors’ digital mobile stores, which act as “rent collectors.”
The company previously received permission to have the EGS app appear in the App Store, which seems to have prompted it to take the current step. The list of platforms from which Fortnite and other games will be removed includes the Samsung Galaxy Store. But it looks like this won’t be the only store affected (and the App Store certainly won’t be included in this list).
At the same time, Epic will add its projects to those stores that have “great deals” for developers, such as the AltStore platform, which is focused on selling indie games.
With these moves, Epic is allegedly trying to support third-party platforms with the same “great deals” that developers can take advantage of. However, the decision will also help the company itself, since they will not have to pay a percentage for placing games on competitors.
In the same statement, Epic added that the commission for developers who will sell their projects in the mobile version of EGS will be 12% – the same as in the main version of the store (0% when using a third-party payment system).
The company had been fighting to get the EGS app into the App Store since 2020, when Apple refused to bow to Epic. But eventually, the European Commission put pressure on Apple, so the company had to comply.
The EGS app will launch on iOS and Android this year, and Lego recently unveiled its first Fortnite-themed sets.
