As we’ve said before, Samsung is the dominant force in the foldable world. However, this does not mean that it is the manufacturer that brings the most innovation to the market. In fact, if there’s one thing we’ve seen, it’s rival manufacturers investing more and better in the foldable format, be it this Fold or Flip.
A great example is what Xiaomi presented very recently in China (MIX Flip and MIX Fold), where we can see Samsung being surpassed in at least 5 areas.
Foldables: Xiaomi is ahead of Samsung in 5 aspects! (Spoiler… It’s not just Xiaomi!)
So what are these aspects? We’re obviously talking about the thickness and weight of Xiaomi’s new devices, with the MIX Fold 4 being barely thicker than the size of the USB-C port.
The MIX Fold 4 is lighter, it’s more beautiful, and it’s also thinner.
In addition, we have larger screens on the Xiaomi side, which has been a problem with Samsung devices for several generations. Samsung’s secondary screens are always too thin and therefore awkward to use in everyday use. The new MIX Fold, as well as other foldable devices such as the HONOR Magic V2, have already fixed this problem years ago, and as such, feature an external screen that is just like any other screen you might find on a traditional large smartphone. (This without compromising the weight or thickness of the device).
We also have to talk about the cameras!
Yes, Xiaomi doesn’t have the same image capture power that we can find in its Ultra. Still, while the Z Fold 6 doesn’t have a periscopic camera for Zoom, the MIX Fold 4 has two lenses for Zoom, a 2x 50MP and a 5X 10MP periscopic. In addition to these, Xiaomi also equips the MIX Fold 4’s camera module with 2 other sensors, a 50MP (main) and a 12MP (ultra-wide).
Every camera on the MIX Fold 4 has the Leica touch.
Battery!
This is a very important point. The Z Fold 6 comes with a 4400mAh battery, while the MIX Fold 4 has a 5100mAh cell. It’s an almost absurd difference.
In fact, there is another foldable device (Vivo X Fold 3) that can fit a 5700mAh battery into a foldable body. There is no excuse.
In addition to the size, you also need to bet on fast charging, since the Z Fold 6 is “stuck” at 25W.
But… Many of these foldables that are theoretically superior to the Z Fold 6… Will not reach Europe!
It is very likely that the MIX Fold 4 and VIVO X Fold 3 will never reach our market. Chinese manufacturers continue to prefer to launch these types of devices only in their territory, because the uptake in Europe and the United States remains extremely weak.
Still, HONOR has already launched its Magic V2 and is also expected to launch its new Magic V3. So things seem to be changing, and as such, Samsung needs to get off its ass that seems to be leaning against the shadiest banana tree in its backyard.
